Evolutionary Leaders:

In Service to Conscious Evolution

Evolutionary Leaders 2009 Retreat Group Photo

On July 26, 2008 the Chopra Foundation, the Source of Synergy Foundation and the Association for Global New Thought invited a group of renowned Evolutionary Leaders (please see bios below) to the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California, to explore their extraordinary potential as a collective. Out of this gathering came A Call to Conscious Evolution: Our Moment of Choice.

Since then, additional leaders have joined this effort and together they have established a collective platform that is generating various exciting projects. In the coming year the group plans to connect with other conscious evolutionaries in the movement to more profoundly accelerate the shift in consciousness together.

Here are details about 60 Evolutionary Leaders: In Service to Conscious Evolution:

Don Beck
For the last four decades I have sought to understand psychology at the large scale: the design and transformation of whole societies. This involves characteristics of the mass mind; the underlying DNA-like Codes that shape human groupings within various habitats and Life Conditions; and, now, the unique dynamics of change, shifts, and transitions. My world is full of cycles, spirals, force fields, multiple identities, conflicting ideologies, Us vs. Them polarities, and a map full of political, economic, religious, social, racial and ethnic cells. I sense order in this chaos, with billions of humans passing through different zones in the premodern, modern, postmodern, and now integral flows. Any serious effort at global transformation must bring the entire spiral of value systems with it. The danger is that we will simply project our own affluent world views on to people who are struggling with different Life Conditions, who are not as “enlightened” as we are. Our efforts must be deep, broad, proactive and systemic.

So, what to do?

First, we need new conceptual maps to enable us to recognize these diversities in human populations that transcend race, gender, ethnicity, national identities. Not everybody can see them. Life in Flatland is very comfortable.

Second, consider the role of Vital Signs Monitors to carefully track progress, regressions, and potential violence. Singapore has such a capacity in the Risk Analysis Horizontal Scanning technology.

Third, construct scaffoldings of solutions to provide models to address the change FROM what and TO what potentials, with practical examples.

If we are now in a period of twilight and uncertainty, is this before darkness – and all hell is about to break out – or before dawn – as we prepare for a momentous leap into a new civilization? Which is it?

It was Buckminster Fuller who said: “Don’t fight forces, use them.”

Michael Bernard Beckwith

Joan Borysenko
Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. has been described as “a respected scientist, a gifted therapist, and an unabashed mystic.” Author of 14 books, as well as numerous audio and video programs, Joan is trained as a cancer cell biologist, psychologist, and spiritual director. Her doctorate is from the Harvard Medical School where she served as instructor in medicine before founding Mind-Body Health Sciences LLC in Boulder, CO. A pioneer in mind-body medicine, her work encompasses practical wisdom on human development and spiritual growth. Joan is a nationally known speaker and co-founder and director of the Claritas Institute for Interspiritual Inquiry, a blogger for the Huffington Post, and co-host (with her husband Gordon Dveirin) of the Hay House radio network show The Spirit of the Future: Voices of Vision and Hope. Her latest book, published by Hay House in Sept 2009 is It’s Not the End of the World: Developing Resilience in Times of Change. You can find out more at www.joanborysenko.com.

Interests: My interests have always been in the practical realm of helping people to heal, uncover their true nature, and experience compassion, peace, and connection to a larger whole. Underlying these interests is a fascination with resilience…what makes a person, a family, a corporation, or a government resilient? Resilience and change are an important aspect of my writing and speaking as is spirituality. The “new” movement called SNBR (spiritual but not religious) overlaps with the field of interspirituality (the common mystical ground beyond doctrine and dogma) that continues to be one of my major interests and the subject of the schools and programs of the Claritas Institute.

Gregg Braden
New York Times best-selling author Gregg Braden is internationally renowned as a pioneer in bridging science and spirituality. Following a successful career as a Computer Geologist for Phillips Petroleum during the 1970s energy crisis, he became a Senior Computer Systems Designer for Martin Marietta Defense Systems during the during the last years of the Cold War. In 1991 he was appointed the first Technical Operations Manager for Cisco Systems where he led the development of the global support team that assures the reliability of today’s internet.

For more than 25 years Gregg has searched high mountain villages, remote monasteries, and forgotten texts to uncover their timeless wisdom. His work has been featured throughout the world through live presentations and media specials including Oprah Radio, Coast-to-Coast AM, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and the SciFi Channel, and new a new feature-length film to be released in 2010. To date, his work has led to such paradigm-shattering books as The Isaiah Effect, The God Code and The Divine Matrix.

His 2009 release, Fractal Time: The Secret of 2012 and a New World Age, merges the modern discoveries of nature’s patterns (fractals) with the ancient view of a cyclic universe to reveal a powerful new model of time—fractal time. Applying fractal time to the history of the world and life, Gregg proposes that everything from economic cycles and the war and peace between nations, to the personal patterns of love and betrayal mirror the returning cycles of our past. As each cycle repeats, it carries a window of opportunity—a choice point—that allows us to select a new outcome for the returning pattern! Fractal Time gives new meaning, and renewed hope, to the emerging crises of today’s world.

Gregg’s work is now published in 18 languages and 30 countries and shows us beyond any reasonable doubt that the key to our future lies in the wisdom of our past. www.greggbraden.com

For the last 24 years, Cohen has been traveling the world giving public lectures and intensive retreats. Through his ongoing dialogues with leading philosophers, scientists, and mystics, he has become known as one of the defining voices of the new evolutionary spirituality.

Cohen’s teaching was born out of the traditional Eastern philosophy, Advaita Vedanta. In time, as a result of his own inquiry and intensive work with students worldwide, his understanding of the meaning and purpose of Enlightenment evolved into a comprehensive model for individual and cultural development. This teaching, which he calls Evolutionary Enlightenment, sets the perennial spiritual quest in a deep-time evolutionary context, offering a path and perspective more relevant to our postmodern era.

Cohen’s dedication to upleveling the spiritual, philosophical, and moral conversation can be best seen in his flagship publication EnlightenNext. In its 18 years in print, the magazine has engaged spiritual, cultural, and scientific thought leaders in a dynamic inquiry about the nature of inner and outer evolution. It has become known for its longstanding feature “The Guru and the Pandit,” a series of 25 revolutionary dialogues between Cohen and integral philosopher Ken Wilber.

Dale Colton

She also works as a Consultant and/or Promotion Agent for a number of the Evolutionary Leaders.

She recently served as a member of the Operations Team and a Consultant to the Alliance for a New Humanity, a humanitarian organization founded by Deepak Chopra. There, she co-created with Deepak “Be the Change,” an international community outreach movement.

We have windows of opportunity constantly being presented to us within which quantum leaps can be made. Mutual respect, cooperation and collaboration among individuals, communities and organizations of like-minded people world-wide can collectively create enough conscious coherence to form a “critical mass” to shift the consciousness of the planet.

Interests: The overarching interest that unites and excites the various projects I’m involved with is what the 13th century Sufi mystic Ib’n Arabi called the theophanic imagination, and which I think of as the evolutionary imagination…the creativity of the heart. Imagination is a faculty of perception that allows a person to see the higher possibilities inherent within a given situation. Michelangelo, for example, saw the figures inherent within the blocks of marble he chose for his sculptures. Martin Luther King, Jr. saw through racial tension to the potential for equality. In this time of global chaos and rapid change, my interest is how to use a four-part process that we’ve been working with in our Claritas Programs to train the organ of evolutionary imagination. That process involves alignment with the Source of Being; discernment (am I running an egoic agenda or being guided by a larger flow); action in the world; and retrospection or learning from our experience. This process is based on inquiry rather than dogma and helps to till the field out of which synergy arises.

Duane’s website is: www.awakeningearth.org.

Areas of Work: Over the past four decades I’ve focused my speaking, writing, and activism in four major areas: 1) exploring the big picture of the human journey as the world approaches a tipping point and actions that we can take to build a more promising future; 2) advocating “voluntary simplicity” or more sustainable and meaningful ways of living; 3) exploring a unifying vision of our universe as a living system as seen by both science and spirituality; and 4) transforming the conversation of democracy by working for the more conscious use of the mass media (as a citizen-activist, I have co-founded three non-profit and non-partisan organizations working for media accountability and an empowered democracy).

Nipun Mehta
Nipun Mehta is the founder of CharityFocus.org, a fully volunteer-run organization that has delivered millions of dollars of web-related services to the nonprofit world for free. The recipient of the Jefferson Award for Public Service and the President's Volunteer Service Award, his work creatively leverages web technologies for collaborative and transformational giving, lending him insight into service, leadership, organizational design, and spirituality. He serves on the advisory boards of the Seva Foundation, Dalai Lama Foundation, and Airline Ambassadors.

Nipun's high-school goal was to either become a tennis-pro or a Himalayan Yogi. However, by the third year of his Computer Science and Philosophy degree at UC Berkeley, he started his software career at Sun Microsystems. Dissatisfied by the dot-com greed of the late 90s, Nipun went to a homeless shelter with three friends to "give with absolutely no agendas." They ended up creating a website, and also an organization named CharityFocus. Today, CharityFocus's 285 thousand members incubate compassionate action in a multitude of ways and its inspiration portals get 100 million hits a year. In 2001, at the age of 25, Nipun quit his job to become a "full time volunteer." He didn't have a plan of survival beyond six months, but so far, so good.

In January 2005, Nipun and Guri, his wife of six months, dropped everything to embark on an open-ended, unscripted walking pilgrimage in India to "use our hands to do random acts of kindness, use our heads to profile inspiring people, and use our hearts to cultivate truth." Living on dollar a day, eating wherever food is offered, sleeping wherever a flat surface is found, the couple walked 1000 kilometers before ending up at a monastery where they meditated for three months. Today, both Nipun and Guri live in Berkeley, do small acts of service with great love, and run CharityFocus.

Nipun's mission statement in life reads: "Bring smiles in the world and stillness in my heart."

Rustum Roy
Newsweek has accurately described Rustum Roy as “the leading contrarian” among U.S. scientists. The U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Science, Technology, and Research gave him its only standing ovation in 16 years after one of his recent testimonies. Rustum Roy is the only practicing prominent American scientist who has studied and written critically about U.S. science policy from the inside. His criticisms of U.S. policy, regarded as far out a decade ago, are now called 'prescient'. He calls himself a citizen-scientist trying to be a whole person.

Rustum Roy, on The Pennsylvania State University's faculty for sixty years, is among the two or three leading materials scientists in the U.S. Author of over 1000 papers with major contributions to real science from inventing the sol-gel process to glass ceramics to diamond films and nanocomposites and microwave and laser processing of materials. He is the senior-most member in the U.S. National Academy of Engineering specializing in (ceramic) materials--today one of the hottest fields in science. He has also been elected as a foreign member of the Swedish, Japanese, Indian, and Russian National Academies, and 'knighted' by the Emperor of Japan.

When the history of postwar American higher education is written, Rustum Roy will be remembered as the most effective champion of interdisciplinarity and integrative learning. In materials science and engineering, the prototype of interdisciplinarity in the science disciplines, Roy not only established working models locally in both degree programs and research laboratories and led them to national prominence, but he led the campaign in the U.S. and abroad to institutionalize 'materials' as a permanent part of academia. His conferences, workshops, and committees all helped, but the establishment of a new professional society - the Materials Research Society - of which he was the principal architect, proved to be the most effective strategy.

A decade later, Roy launched a similar campaign, again starting locally, to institutionalize formally the bridge in American education across the widening chasm of C.P. Snow's 'Two Cultures'. He became the prime mover in the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) movement, which, between 1970 and 1990, had established itself on 100 university campuses and had a foothold in 2000 colleges and has successfully infiltrated into the K-12 system.

Rustum Roy, a lifelong dedicated radical Christian, was also intensely involved in reforming religious institutions, locally, nationally, and worldwide. The direction was always towards greater inclusively. He helped start the Sycamore Community, one of the oldest ecumenical house churches in the country, and was for 30 years on the board of the pioneering national ecumenical retreat center, Kirkridge. Since giving the prestigious Hibbert lectures in London, incorporating the insights of science and technology into the world's religions, he has become a spokesman for a “radical pluralist” integration among the world's religions and cultures.

What is most interesting about Rustum Roy is the breadth, not only of his interests, but his activities and achievements in each field. Perhaps the best way to gauge this breadth is to note the subjects of his well-known books (outside his science); science policy; sexual ethics; radioactive waste management; liturgies for small groups. He is as equally at home among the world's leading theologians, clergy, artists, and healing 'gurus' as he is among scientists/engineers from industry or academe, and among social reformers or activists in entrepreneurial business innovation.

He has degrees in theoretical physics, experimental psychology, and computer science from the University of Cambridge, England. In India, he studied meditation and Eastern philosophy, and on his return took up research into the psychophysiology of meditation at the University of Bristol.

He was one of the first people to introduce human potential seminars into the corporate field, and for twenty years worked with major corporations on creativity, learning methods, stress management and personal development. His principal interest is the inner challenges of the times we are passing through. His books include The Global Brain, Waking Up in Time, and most recently From Science to God.

Current Work

I am currently working on two new books. One on letting go, which brings together the various insights and discoveries from my own meditation work. It proposes that letting go is not something you do, but you can learn how to let it happen in just about any area of life.

The second book presents a view of the cosmos in which consciousness is fundamental—and the ultimate source of what we perceive as space, time, and matter. Many have proposed this point of view from metaphysical perspectives, but I am arguing for this from conclusions in contemporary science, showing how they point to the very same picture.

In recent years, I have developed various fine-tunings to meditation practice which allow one to let go into profound stillness more easily, and am beginning to teach these in my workshops and retreats with very encouraging results.

I am also working on a complete remake of my video The Global Brain. www.peterrussell.com

Brian Swimme
The simplest ways of describing what I do is to tell you about a moment living in New York, studying with the cultural historian Thomas Berry.  We were at the Broadway Diner drinking coffee and he said, "You scientists have this great story of the universe but you can't hear the music.  That's where the spiritual traditions come in.  Tell the new story but tell it with a feeling for the universe's music."  That was 25 years ago and that's pretty much what I've been trying to do with my life.  Mostly this consists of teaching courses in "evolutionary cosmology" to graduate students in the humanities at the California Institute of Integral Studies, located in San Francisco.  www.brianswimme.org
